On a recent trip to London sans the family, I became familiar with a rather vexatious (word of the day) regularity imposed by credit card companies: international credit card transaction fees. Yes, they are exactly what they sound like: fees imposed for using your credit card overseas. Having never used my own credit card in a foreign country, I was completely oblivious such fees existed and was blindsided when I received my statement. In fact, everything I purchased cost 3% more than I thought. So, in the wake of my errors, a word to the wise: make sure you know how much (what percentage) your credit card company charges for international transaction fees. This way, you'll truly know the exact amount you are spending. Most major credit cards charge anywhere from 2% to 3% on all international transactions. The only credit cards that do not charge an international fee are Discover and Capital One.
